Capped Composites vs. Cellular PVC Deck Materials

CappedComposite-vs-PVC

Capped Composite decking from leading manufacturers such as Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Deckorators, and MoistureShield, are made by combining recycled plastics and wood fiber core, capped with a PVC shell. These will absorb and maintain heat more than wood, however, both will get hot to the touch when exposed to direct sunlight.

Capped Polymer or Cellular PVC, decking is made from 100% PVC. The leading manufacturers are TimberTech (Azek line), Zuri, Endeck, and Fiberon. The core is composed of an air cell PVC material, which makes it lighter than Capped Composites, capped with a durable shell. The air cell core acts as an insulator, keeping it cooler than wood or capped composites. The surface, especially in darker colors, can get warm, but the heat dissipates quickly when touched. Cellular PVC’s are typically more durable than capped composites.

Both products are low-maintenance, needing only occasional cleaning. They are splinter-free and most are highly durable. They have at least a 25-year performance warranty; meaning they won’t crack, peel, or delaminate, and are resistant to insects. They also have at least a 25-year stain and fade warranty.
