Maintaining Your Deck Through the Winter Months

Proper care of your deck during the cold winter months helps it to keep its lasting function and beauty.

Clearing off the snow

Avoid using metal shovels, which can easily scratch the deck surface, and instead choose a plastic shovel.  Run the shovel in the direction of the deck boards, rather than across them.  Be careful around railing posts and mitered or butted decking joints, to ensure the post skirts and decking capstock does not get damaged.

Capped Composites vs. Cellular PVC Deck Materials

CappedComposite-vs-PVC

Capped Composite decking from leading manufacturers such as Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Deckorators, and MoistureShield, are made by combining recycled plastics and wood fiber core, capped with a PVC shell. These will absorb and maintain heat more than wood, however, both will get hot to the touch when exposed to direct sunlight.

BUILDING IN THE WINTER

Do the bitter cold temperatures give you daydreams of warmer days?  Then it’s the perfect time to sit down with us to design your outdoor oasis.  Aside from the warm thoughts of seasons to come, it helps you get a leg up on those who wait until spring to get started.

During this time we can work with you to create the dream design and even apply for permits.  Applying for permits may not sound like a big deal but did you know that in some cities/villages it can take up to a month from the time the application is submitted to the time the permit is received?

Sometimes we don’t have to wait until spring to get started.  Obviously, we don’t work when the temperatures are below zero, but by using special blankets we can warm the ground enough to dig for the posts.  Once the groundwork is done, building your dream outdoor room begins.

If you’d rather not have any construction crews around right now, that’s no problem.  We can still create your design, apply for permits, and reserve your spot for spring.  All we need is a contract and a down payment.

We love to talk about design options.  Give us a call at (847) 577-2722.  We’ll come out, take some measurements and give you ideas on what your outdoor oasis could be.

SWEEPING AWAY SNOW AND ICE

This Saturday, December 21st marks the start, officially, of winter.  So far here in Chicago, it has been a very cold and snowy time.  What does all of this snow and cold mean for your deck?  Do you need to add shoveling and salting to your list of winter chores?

For a composite deck, think Timbertech, the answer is “maybe not”.  These decks are designed to withstand winter.  There may be unnoticeable shrinkage due to the cold, but once the warmer temperatures come in, they will expand back.

You may want to clear an exit path if your deck serves as a secondary exit.  To clear the snow, a corn broom is recommended as it is less likely to scrape, scratch or gouge the deck.  The corn broom is good for a light dusting up to a an inch or two.  For the heavier snow accumulations, a plastic shovel is recommended to minimize the change of scratching or gouging your beautiful deck like a metal shovel might.

What about wood decks?

Ipe, our favorite wood , fares better than the softer woods such as cedar or redwood.  Follow the same recommendations as the composite decks but be prepared- the wood decks are more vulnerable.
